Evening Primrose for Acne

Evening primrose is a wildflower that grows in North America, particularly the United States. A well known natural remedy is made by using the seeds of the plant. It can help cure allergies, skin conditions as well as pre menstrual syndrome. According to the American Academy of Dermatology 80% of people suffer from acne in the United States. Acne is identified as a skin problem that develops when the sebaceous glands excrete a large amount of oil that blocks the pores of the skin causing dirt and bacteria to be produced within the pores of the skin. The types of acne can be classified as acne pustules, acne papules, and acne cysts. Numerous types of treatments are available however the effectiveness of each treatment depends on the kind of acne a person is suffering from and the level of its severity. For mild acne natural acne treatments added with constant care for the skin can be the best combination for treating the skin problem since this not only improves the condition but also revitalizes the health of the skin.

According to the Maryland Medical Centre Evening Primrose is used to help reduce acne since the oil from the seeds hold essential fatty acids called gamma-linolenic acid also known as GLA.  The oil can be applied directly onto the affected areas or oil containing capsules can be simply ingested. The University of Michigan Health system identifies the effectiveness of primrose for people suffering from diabetes, acne or eczema since they do not produce enough GLA that causes the metabolism to get blocked. Even though the overall effectiveness of using primrose is speculative at this point since not enough research has been conducted, patients have reported an improvement in acne condition when they added primrose to their diet.

It is still not clear how well primrose works against more severe types of acne, therefore in such cases it is advisable to consult a dermatologist who can prescribe a favorable treatment.
