Exfoliating

The process of removing the build-up of dead skin cells and any stubborn dirt from your skin is centuries old - even the ancient Egyptians used oatmeal to decongest the skin for renewal. As we age, the renewal rate of our skin slows down, which leaves it thicker and duller-looking. Whether you have dry or oily skin, regular exfoliation helps prevent it looking flaky or spotty.

There are two main methods - one is physical exfoliation, with grainy substances that work on the surface. However, natural substances are used in many skin creams these days as alternatives to physical abrasives which are too harsh for most skins. For example, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are extracted from sugar cane, milk, molasses, apples or wine, and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) from wintergreen and fruits, papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapples. These acids act by breaking down the intercellular 'glue' that holds cells together.

Don't be alarmed by images of facial disintegration! If well formulated they form an important part of any skin routine. They help to clear blocked pores and smooth away dead, dry skin. If you have sensitive skin, go for a milder product with no more than 8 per cent AHAs - any higher may sting, although a very slight, temporary stinging is not unusual anyway. Again, it's always a good idea to get advice from an expert in a salon.
